Mark Barnes
Executive Chairman
B.BusSc (Actuarial Science) (UCT), PMD (HBS)

Mark Barnes has over 25 years experience in positions of leadership in the financial services market in South Africa. He holds a BBusSc (Actuarial Science) from the University of Cape Town and a PMD from Harvard Business School. Mark joined Standard Merchant Bank (SMB) in corporate finance, a division he subsequently led for a number of years. During this period Mark played a leading advisory role in many major deals in corporate South Africa.

Mark subsequently took responsibility for SMB's Treasury operations and when SMB merged with the corporate areas of the Standard Bank Group to form SCMB he was appointed as Deputy Managing Director with operational responsibility for the Standard Bank Group's Treasury and Project Finance Divisions. Mark was involved in significant asset based financing structures; led the implementation of two gold producer structured funding deals which were the biggest ever in the world; and led the team which raised R1 billion of funding by issuing the first ever listed seven year fixed-rate corporate bond in the local market. Mark was a member of the Standard Bank Group's Executive Committee until he resigned in November 1996 to take up the position of Group Chief Executive of Capital Alliance Holdings Limited.

Capital Alliance was an insurance and financial services group listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. Mark led the strategy to merge the banking and asset management interests of Capital Alliance with the leading private equity partnership of Capital Partners to form Brait, an international investment and merchant banking group listed on the London, Luxembourg and Johannesburg Stock Exchanges in 1998. Mark was the Group CEO of Brait until March 2000 when he left to form his own corporate finance and investment banking business, Calajero.

Mark has previously served as a member of the boards of several companies listed on the JSE and he is currently a Trustee of the World Wildlife Fund for Nature and a director of Plate Glass. In February 2005 Mark acquired a significant stake in Purple Capital where, as Executive Chairman, he continues to lead it on its growth strategy.

Mike Wilson
Executive Director

Mike qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1995 and has worked in various consulting and financial management positions in companies in South Africa, UK and Australia. He is currently Financial Director of Global Trader and the Purple Capital Group.
Charles Savage
Executive Director


Charles Savage pioneered the world's first online spread trading platform to execute client transactions without any human intervention in 2001.This brought him to Global Trader, where he has managed the group's South African business since 2003 and its technology strategy until 2005. Charles led the group buyout by Purple Capital in 2007. As CEO of Global Trader, Charles is responsible for the company's overall strategy and directly leads the execution of sales, marketing and business development strategies. Charles is also a member of the Purple Capital board

Craig Carter
Non-executive Director

Craig has over 25 years experience, predominantly in financial services, including Treasury and Corporate Finance. Craig joined Purple Capital at its inception as COO and most recently was COO for Global Trader. He holds a BSc in Computer Science and Statistics and an MBA from Wits. Craig is taking a break this year from full-time employment but has remained on the Purple Capital Board and Audit Committee.

Ronnie Lubner
Non-executive Director

Ronnie Lubner is Chairman of the PG Group, South Africa's leading integrated glass business and Chairman of the international Belron group, the world's largest, dedicated, vehicle glass repair and replacement company.

Dennis Alter
Non-executive Director

Dennis Alter is Chairman and major shareholder of Advanta Corporation, a speciality finance company headquartered in Spring House, Pennsylvania, USA. Advanta is one of the largest issuers of business credit cards in the United States with managed receivables in excess of $5 billion and a market capitalisation in excess of $1 billion.

Thembeka Gwagwa


Thembeka Gwagwa is the General Secretary of DENOSA and is a director of DIHOLD. Thembeka is involved in training in the health care sector and teaching nursing students, community members and workers. She is involved in planning, organising and designing health and safety courses for workers and management. Thembeka holds a BCur Degree and Diplomas in Nursing Administration and Nursing Education.
